THE APPLICATION DETERMINES THE BEST MATERIAL

The choice of material to use is the first step towards optimum results, and depends on factors such as:

  • application
  • use conditions (environmental, pressure, contact with products or chemical agents)
  • physical properties that determine proper gasket operation (hardness, elasticity, compression, abrasion resistance, etc.)

Gaskets used in the food industry must comply with specific standards: FDA, 3A, FCMA, BFR, M.D.; those designed for the oil industry, on the other hand, have to withstand high temperatures and chemicals.

The rubber compounds used for gaskets may be:

NATURAL, excellent mechanical properties and ideal for dynamic uses

  • NR, excellent abrasion resistance and exceptional elasticity
  • IR, isoprene rubber similar to NR but more resistant to atmospheric agents

SYNTHETIC

  • EPDM, resistant to water, steam, atmospheric agents and many chemicals
  • NBR, resistant to oils, greases, solvents, fuels
  • FKM, or Viton®, fluoroelastomer, withstands extreme temperatures, aggressive chemicals, ideal for use in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry
  • VMQ, Silicone, high elasticity and resistance to low and high temperatures and compatible for the food and pharmaceutical sector
  • CR, Chloroprene, resistant to fire, solvents, oils and atmospheric agents
  • SBR, Styrene-butadiene, good abrasion resistance and highly elastic
  • IRR, Butyl rubber, low gas permeability, heat and chemical resistant, excellent vibration damping properties
  • PU, polyurethane rubber, exceptional resistance to abrasion, oils and high loads
